Postal fraud: Business will pay

In an effort to curb an estimated $100 million in fraud losses per year. the U.S. Postal Service is requiring all postal-meter users to convert from mechanical to electronic or digital meters.

The conversion is expected to cost the average small business a minimum of $3,000 per machine, according to Julie A. Wilson, senior mailing systems consultant for Priority Systems in Harrisburg.

For companies that have a high volume of mail, the changeover could be even more costly. That's because higher-end machines cost $25,000 for the base alone, and companies that have such high volume often use more than one meter.
