FED:Miscarriage sparks fear over NSW health
A pregnant woman says she was left alone at a New South Wales public hospital .. where
she miscarried her child while waiting for surgery.
HEATHER GREEN says she was calling out for help as she miscarried at Blacktown Hospital
last Wednesday .. almost a full day since she first arrived.
It's prompted an apology from the hospital and a promise from Health Minister CARMEL
TEBBUTT to look into the incident.
Ms GREEN has told the Nine Network she requested surgery on Tuesday evening to remove
her unborn baby .. which had died in the womb .. but a problem with the hospital's computer
admission system saw her sent home at four am.
When she returned the next day .. she was told the operating theatre wasn't ready ..
and was alone when she miscarried.
The incident brings to mind JANA HORSKA .. who waited for two hours at Sydney's Royal
North Shore Hospital before miscarrying in a toilet in 2007.

QLD:P&O passenger cleared of meningococcal
By Petrina Berry
BRISBANE, Aug 31 AAP - A seriously ill man winched off a P&O cruise ship with a suspected
meningococcal infection does not have the disease.
Passengers and crew aboard the P&O cruise liner were treated with antibiotics after
health authorities feared a 51-year-old passenger from the Sydney suburb of Strathfield
had the potentially fatal disease.
But Queensland Health confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that he did not have a meningococcal
infection.
A spokeswoman from the department declined to say what illness the man had that required
him to be winched from the deck of the Pacific Sun on Monday night and flown to the Gold
Coast Hospital.
Queensland Health says it has expedited tests on the man to get a result as quickly as possible.
The ship was about 110km east of the Gold Coast travelling from Sydney to New Caledonia
when the emergency evacuation occurred.
Antibiotics were given to the man's travel partner and others who came into close contact
with him, including medical staff and crew, because he was a suspected meningococcal case.
There was a meningococcal outbreak on another P&O ship, the Pacific Sky, in January 2002.
Lorenzo Lombardo, 21, from Sydney, died from the disease six days after leaving a Pacific
island cruise.
An Adelaide man who'd been on the same cruise was also diagnosed with the disease.
Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacteria carried in the back of the throat and
can be transferred from person to person through fluid from the nose or throat of an infected
person.
Pacific Sun is on an eight-night voyage to the South Pacific and will return to Sydney
on September 6.
It will miss its first port of call at Emerald Bay, New Caledonia, because of the medical
evacuation.

Fed: Govt used NRL scandal to bury bad news: Abbott
SYDNEY, April 23 AAP - Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says the federal government must
have had prior knowledge of the NRL salary cap scandal and chose the day to bury bad news.
The Melbourne Storm was stripped of two NRL titles on Thursday for breaching the code's
salary cap in one of Australia's biggest sports scandals.
Mr Abbott has accused the government of knowing the news would divert public attention
from announcements it was scrapping the home insulation scheme and reneging on an election
promise to build 260 childcare centres.
In both instances, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd left it to junior ministers to deliver
the news on Thursday, just hours prior to the NRL's revelations about the Storm scandal.
"It's pretty clear we have a prime minister who not only can't take tough decisions,
but runs away from bad news," Mr Abbott told reporters in Sydney on Friday.
"We had two major announcements of serious broken promises yesterday.
"It's curious they were made on a day when there was a major public story running that
the government must have known would bury the bad news."
The government's controversial home insulation scheme was sidelined in February, but
was due to start again under a modified form in June.
But Assistant Energy Efficiency Minister Greg Combet announced it was being scrapped altogether.
Child Care Minister Kate Ellis said the government had scrapped a plan to deliver hundreds
of childcare centres, arguing that building them could threaten the viability of existing
services.
The government will build 38 centres already under construction, costing $114 million.

Fed: More Aust troops coming home from East Timor
CANBERRA, Dec 10 AAP - Australia continues to reduce its troop numbers in a more peaceful
East Timor with 100 soldiers set to return home by Christmas.
Defence Minister John Faulkner says Australia's contribution to the International Stabilisation
Force (ISF) would be reduced to 400 personnel - down from 650 - by February.
The overall size of the joint Australian-New Zealand force will decrease from 800 to
550 personnel.
The reduction was agreed following extensive discussions with East Timor's leadership,
the United Nations and New Zealand.
"The security situation in East Timor has remained stable since the February 2008 attacks
on East Timor's president and prime minister," Senator Faulkner said in a statement.
The decision to reduce Australian troop numbers recognised the continuing calm security
situation and efforts to maintain that position by the East Timor government and its people,
he said.
The ISF would increase its focus on capacity building of the East Timorese military forces.
The planned drawdown will start with about 100 personnel returning to Australia in mid-December.
Others will come home progressively in the new year.
"The Australian servicemen and women completing their deployments can now look forward
to a period of leave, reconstitution and training back in Australia following their time
in East Timor," Senator Faulkner said.
New Zealand's contribution to ISF will remain unchanged at 150 personnel.

Vic: Lucky hippo finds new home in Melbourne
MELBOURNE, Aug 2 AAP - Call it a lucky day for Melbourne animal lovers.
A baby pygmy hippo has found a new home in the city after a shaky start in Sydney.
Monifa, who's name means "I am lucky" in Nigerian, was born weighing just 3.8kg at
the Taronga Zoo.
Zoo keepers provided 24-hour care for her by sleeping and hand-feeding the piglet-sized hippo.
Nine months later, Monifa has grown to 65kg and developed a healthy appetite for grains
and fruit.
She even eats her vegetables.
The rare hippo will be officially welcomed to the Melbourne Zoo on Sunday with a tour
around her exhibit.
Her father Timmy was no stranger to Melbourne. He lived at the zoo for many years until
he was transferred to Sydney as part of a regional breeding program.
Melbourne Zoo director Kevin Tanner says he's delighted to welcome Monifa to her new
home as her father was such a favourite among visitors.
Pygmy hippos live in lowland African rainforests and are considered a vulnerable species
with only 3,000 animals still surviving in the wild.
The hippos reach full size when they're four or five years old, weighing about 200kg.

NSW: Rainwater tanks contaminated with lead, study
SYDNEY, April 13 AAP - Melbourne rainwater tanks have been found to be contaminated
with lead, aluminium and iron, with roofing material thought to be to blame.
The study, by Monash University and the CSIRO, found the use of lead on some roofs
had elevated the level of lead found in rainwater collected in the tanks, in some case
to 50 times drinking water guidelines.
The concentration of other heavy metals was also found in the rainwater, The Australian
newspaper reported.
"Concentrations of aluminium, cadmium, iron and zinc were also found at levels exceeding
acceptable health and aesthetic levels," the study said.
Report co-author, Monash University's Grace Mitchell, said the findings reinforced
the need for people to avoid drinking water from rainwater tanks.
"It is more natural in the sense that it's not treated, but in some cases that's not
a good thing," she said.

SA: Interstate help called in as bushfire emergency continues
By Tim Dornin
ADELAIDE, Dec 10 AAP - Firefighters will be brought in from Victoria, NSW and Tasmania
as the battle continues against three major bushfires burning on South Australia's Kangaroo
Island.
A huge aircrane helitanker, capable of carrying 9,000 litres of water, arrived on the
island from Victoria today as fears remained for heritage and farming land, wilderness
areas and a number of properties.
A return to hot and windy conditions later this week, also was a major concern.
The Country Fire Service (CFS) said five strike teams from Victoria were due to arrive
today and five more would come from NSW and Tasmania on Wednesday, adding 250 personnel
to the fight.
The CFS said the blazes in the Flinders Chase National Park, at Western River on the
north coast and at D'Estrees Bay on the island's south coast were still burning strongly.
Two other fires of concern in recent days, at Vivonne Bay and at Riverleas, have been contained.
In the Flinders Chase National Park the blaze had destroyed more than 5,200 hectares
and was now burning in wilderness and scrub not burnt since 1968.
At D'Estrees Bay significant backburning was completed today but the CFS said it remained
a concern largely because it was burning in inaccessible terrain.
It already had destroyed about 9,600 hectares.
At Western River backburning operations also had been completed but the potential for
the blaze to break through containment lines on its eastern flank remained high.
The CFS said a number of properties in the area also were considered at risk and were
being given individual protection.
In response to the fires police today declared most of Kangaroo Island a danger zone
and restricted the movement of people, but decided against declaring an immediate state
of emergency, which would allow additional resources, including the Army, to be called
in.
Police Commissioner Mal Hyde said the CFS believed it could still cope with the situation
as it stands.
"At this stage it's not a resource issue, the CFS have some standing arrangements in
place," Mr Hyde told ABC Radio.
"They have up to 500 firefighters on the island now and they're getting additional
resources from other states.
"They're bringing in extra aerial support as well, so a lot of things are happening
already and it's a fairly large logistical operation."
Mr Hyde said developments that might call for the declaration of a state of emergency,
centred on protecting the community and helping with evacuations.
"It might be (that) you have to make special arrangements for evacuating people and
a declaration might be required there," he said.
Tourists also were urged today not to cancel plans to visit Kangaroo Island despite
the fires closing some key tourist destinations.
The island's local MP Michael Pengilly said hundreds of jobs relied on the tourist trade.
"Kangaroo Island is still open for business and tourists should not be deterred from
visiting one of South Australia's treasures," Mr Pengilly said.
"Fire has closed Flinders Chase National Park, Kelly Hill Caves and Seal Bay National
Park but vast areas of the island and many other attractions remain untouched.
"Tourists have no need to cancel their travel plans."
Mr Pengilly said he was working closely with the state government to assist tourism
operators and families affected by the fires.
"Locals affected by the fire are understandably upset but many are looking positively
to the future," Mr Pengilly said.
Kangaroo Island Mayor Jane Bates said there were many places still open to the public
and to tourists.
"Beautiful beaches, beautiful wineries and our major towns are open," she said.
"There is still plenty to do and see on the island."

Qld: Serial killer hospitalised after heart attack
BRISBANE, Dec 27 AAP - Convicted serial killer Leonard Fraser is in a stable condition
in hospital after suffering a heart attack in his jail cell, authorities say.
The 55-year-old was taken to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital yesterday after
suffering chest pains while in his cell at the Wolston Correctional Centre on the city's
outskirts.
A hospital spokesperson today said Fraser remained in hospital in a stable condition
after suffering the heart attack.
Fraser is Queensland's first convicted serial killer and serving four indefinite life terms.
A Brisbane Supreme Court jury in 2003 convicted him for the murders of Sylvia Benedetti,
19, and Beverly Leggo, 36, as well as the manslaughter of Julie Turner, 39.
Fraser was already serving an indefinite sentence for the rape and murder of nine-year-old
Rockhampton schoolgirl Keyra Steinhardt in April 1999.
All the killings took place in Rockhampton in central Queensland between December 1998
and April 1999.
Fraser had also been charged with the murder of runaway teenager Natasha Ryan until
she sensationally emerged from hiding during his trial.

Qld: Beattie to announce tourism and jobs packages in NQ
BRISBANE, April 12 AAP - Queensland Premier Peter Beattie will return to Innisfail
tomorrow to remind the rest of Australia the cyclone-ravaged area is open for business.
Mr Beattie will announce a funding package to encourage tourists back to the area to
help north Queenslanders get back to work.
He said he was trying to help the tourism industry get over the hurdle of the category-five
Cyclone Larry that tore through Innisfail and surrounds on March 20.
"We want to send a message that it is back to business," Mr Beattie told reporters.
"A lot of people in this area, not just Innisfail but the whole area affected, are
depending on tourism.
"There is a lot of people in Cairns and elsewhere who are doing it tough because of
perceptions about the cyclone.
"We have to send a message that it is back to business."
Mr Beattie will meet members of the cyclone recovery taskforce, headed by Major General
Peter Cosgrove, during his one-day trip.
Meanwhile, federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, who met banana and canegrowers in
Innisfail today, has promised to write to Prime Minister John Howard to pass on farmers'
concerns over the Cyclone Larry relief package.
Mr Beazley wants Mr Howard to extend the wage subsidy scheme that is due to end in June.
Consideration should also be given to an exit scheme for banana growers who wanted
to leave the industry, he said.
"Banana growers want it (the subsidy) for 36 weeks, the cane farmers want it closer
to the conclusion of their season," Mr Beazley told ABC Radio.

Ameritech Directory Assistance Will Cost More in Indiana.
By Gargi Chakrabarty, The Indianapolis Star Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
Jul. 3--Ameritech Indiana will more than double the charge for dialing directory assistance to 85 cents from the current rate of 40 cents per call. The increase, which will take effect Aug. 24, is among other rate changes recently announced by the company.
The charge will increase 20 cents -- to $1.10 -- for those who dial 0 and ask an operator for a number, instead of calling directory assistance at 411.
One rate is dropping. The charge for having directory assistance dial the number you want will decrease 5 cents -- to 20 cents.
All customers will be notified of the price changes by July 27.
"Residential and single-line business customers will continue to receive two directory-assistance calls per month at no charge," said David Bear, an Ameritech spokesman, on Monday.
With the upcoming rate changes, a customer placing three directory assistance calls in a month will receive the first two calls free and pay 85 cents for each call thereafter.
Customers will continue to be able to request two listings per call.
"Two free directory-assistance calls per customer was agreed upon as part of Opportunity Indiana 2000, an alternative regulatory plan," Bear said.
The alternative guidelines allow the utility company to operate under relaxed regulations in exchange for cutting rates and adding services.
However, certain competitive services such as voice mail, caller ID and other custom-calling features are not regulated by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
"Directory assistance, a competitive service, is not regulated under Opportunity Indiana 2000," said Michael Leppert, IURC's executive director. "Ameritech can increase rates of this service by issuing a notice. It doesn't have to seek a regulatory review.
"Pricing flexibility in such services is a motivator to get more competition."
Though the state cannot regulate Ameritech on this rate hike, there is a silver lining.
"Nobody likes to see rate increases," said Anthony Swinger, a spokesman for the Indiana office of the Utility Consumer Counselor. "The good news is that word is getting out in advance. Now customers will have more time to shop around for other options.
"We want customers to know there are other directory assistance (options), such as cellular services and the Internet."
Besides, free phone books are given to all customers, he said.
Ameritech estimated that fewer than 8 percent of its retail residential and business customers will be affected by the price changes.

The inside story from Champagne to toffees; Let's do lunch.(News)
A question which perpetually puzzles me is, how does the media always seem to know and break the news before it has happened?
Something, that is, which continued to confound me until two weeks ago, when I found myself sitting behind a desk at The Birmingham Post, surrounded by real reporters, buzzing telephones, Internet wires and invitations to official Champagne openings.
Well, admittedly there weren't that many Champagne invitations, but I did spot the odd one casually lying around, waiting for a section editor to allocate it to some jammy journalist. One day I just happened to be that lucky person.
The media has always struck me as an elusive entity. Something "out there" which continually pops up in the right place at the right time, thereby revealing news and stories wherever they may be breaking in the world.
Newspapers arrive in the early hours, at newsagents, on doorsteps, in offices, as if by magic; the morning TV news holds the events of the night before while we in the Northern hemisphere are tucked up safely in our beds; radio stations tell us what the likes of Beckham and Posh or Norman and Zoe got up to last night in London's Soho.
The media is everywhere: all-seeing, all-knowing demi-gods that they are.
Even to those of the general public who profess to have little to no respect for the broadcasting world, or "media vultures" as reporters have been fastidiously labelled, there can be no denying that without such a stronghold, we would all live in self-contained cocoons, not knowing and not caring what was happening where and to whom in the outside world.
What sad little lives we would all lead.
OK, so maybe the oracles sometimes get the facts slightly awry. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage was most definitely not a wedding of convenience.
They are totally in love, despite the fact that Mr Cruise is at least two inches shorter than Ms Kidman - without heels.
But rather they make a slight faux-pas about the state of a celebrity marriage, than about the State of Florida as it is hit by one of the worst hurricanes of the year, or the tragic state of affairs currently out of control in East Timor.
I am aware that I have digressed somewhat from my original concern, but somehow I feel that it is my duty, essentially as an outsider (but hopefully not for much longer), to promote the favourable qualities of the press.
The fact that my section editor is sitting immediately to my right at this precise moment, has no sway whatsoever on my scribblings, you understand.
The closest the outside world gets to the mysterious workings taking place on the inside of the media, is through films such as Up Close and Personal or serials like The New Superman.
The Daily Planet is potentially the most popular newspaper in the world, and I defy anyone to dispute that they haven't at some time in their lives believed that this is exactly how a newspaper is run.
Unfortunately for the budding Lois Lane (or fortunately, whichever way you choose to look at it), there are no hunks sporting blue tights with red satin underpants on the outside, flying around these open-plan offices and making news happen.
Indeed, the only low-flying missiles around here are toffees (?), seemingly the stressed reporter's answer to meeting the 4 o'clock deadline. Of course, the media doesn't know the news before it happens, just before the rest of the public know that it has happened.
There is a certain undeniable satisfaction in knowing that when I leave the office at 7pm, I am aware of exactly what is going to feature in tomorrow's papers, and what is likely to be on the 9 o'clock news when I get home.
I have been involved in the whole process of deciding what makes today's news and what can be postponed until tomorrow.
The buzz and faint complacency that is created by that revelation is quite unbelievable, I can tell you.
And far from journalists all being smug, egotistical, self-absorbed story junkies who would shop their own mothers for a splash - sorry, front page story; they are actually very honourable, friendly and helpful members of the community, working because they get the same thrill that I have just described.
Working for the media has actually increased my desire to pursue a career in journalism ten-fold.
And not wishing to give too much away or shatter the illusion of the press as some omnipotent force, suffice to say that the idea of working on a day-to-day basis, not knowing where the next piece of print-worthy news will come from, sounds more appealing than becoming a corporate lawyer - the prefered affluent career of one of my predecessors.
And anyway, I'm quite partial to the odd toffee every now and again.

Yesterday, Kronic's Pineapple Express blend was pulled off shelves after Director-General of Health Kevin Woods revealed it contained a benzodiazepine called phenazepam.
Dr Leo Schep of the National Poisons Centre said smoking three or more joints of Pineapple Express would give a large enough dosage of phenazepam to have considerable effects if combined with alcohol.
``I'm not sure if it would get to the stage of respiratory repression. But it would definitely knock you out.
``We know what happens with a benzo and alcohol ... but we have no idea predicting what will happen with the added ingredient of these synthetic cannabinoids.''
He told the Otago Daily Times he was ``appalled these cowboys'' were inserting the drug into their synthetic cannabis product and selling it.
``I am exasperated ... shocked, that they willy nilly put in other chemicals to increase psychotropic effects on the user ... and they have no idea of the dose.
``It ought not to be in a smoking material.''
Contributors to drug forums on the internet warn others not to smoke phenazepam, with even 1mg causing problems among users.
Ministry of Health officials yesterday met with Lightyears Ahead, the company behind Kronic, , and has said it will investigate further before making any decision on prosecutions.
Penalties for a breach of the Medicines Act 1980 include a company fine of $100,000, or six months in jail and a fine of $20,000 for an individual.
The presence of phenazepam was first suspected during a screening test last month, and confirmed by subsequent tests.
Lightyears Ahead said Pineapple Express was not meant to contain phenazepam, and it was unaware the blend did so. The company has previously referred to the blend as ``our greatest creation'' which is ``fast-acting and strong-hitting''.
It said the presence of the prescription medicine was a ``contamination'', and at 300 parts per million it was a ``small amount''.
Former party pill king Matt Bowden imports the synthetic cannabinoid compounds used to make Kronic's products. His company, Stargate Operations, released a statement denying knowledge of the sedative in Pineapple Express.
But Dr Schep said every joint of Pineapple Express would deliver about 60 per cent of a normal therapeutic dose of phenazepam.
``That is not a contaminant, I'm sorry. And if it is, then their quality assurance isn't up to standard and they should withdraw every product from the market.
Zaid Musa, the director of Enjoi Products, which has manufactured synthetic cannabis products Illusion and Amsterdam Cafe since 2005, was sceptical of Kronic's response.
``Anything you make, you know what you're putting in there ... yes, we do know what we're importing.''
Environmental Science and Research (ESR) has identified 43 synthetic cannabis products and screened about half of them so far.
Another product is being investigated for the presence of a prescription medicine.
Dr Keith Bedford, ESR's general manager of forensic research, said the finding was unexpected, and shed light on the controversy surrounding synthetic cannabis.

Here are highlights from Friday's Analyst Blog:
HP to Roll Out TouchPad Tablet
The leading PC manufacturer Hewlett Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ) is set to roll out its TouchPad tablet, which is touted to be the company's answer to Apple Inc's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad. TouchPad will debut in the United States on July 1 in two versions, with price tags of $500 and $600, respectively.
After the news of the product launch broke, Hewlett-Packard shares moved up by 10 cents to $35.46 during the evening trading session in the New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have dropped 16.0% this year.
The company is offering the product at a competitive price, which matches the price of iPad. The two versions come with 16 and 32 gigabytes of memory and connect to the Internet only through Wi-Fi. Moreover, this is the first tablet, which will run on the webOS operating system, which HP acquired along with Palm Inc for $1.8 billion last year.
The PC major had previously introduced tablets based on Windows, but the new TouchPad is powered by webOS, which is basically a mobile phone operating system, giving the new device a level playing field with iPad.
The company announced that the introductory version of the TouchPad will come with Wi-Fi technology for accessing the Internet through wireless hotspots. Moreover, the upcoming versions of the device will connect through AT&T Inc.'s (NYSE: T) wireless network.
There is desperation among PC makers to get on the tablet bandwagon as consumers are interested in buying the smaller touch screen devices, thereby hurting the demand for traditional PCs. This is evident from the fact that the research firm IDC lowered its estimate for growth in PC shipments this year to 4.2% from 7.1% in February, citing competition from tablets and smartphones as well as a sluggish economy.
Hewlett-Packard is the market leader in the PC business with 19.4% market share, ahead of Dell and Acer. It also holds the #1 position in the Server segment with 39.0% market share. The company is also the largest seller of printers. Moreover, the company has deployed additional sales resources to capture incremental opportunities in the enterprise and mid-markets, which has resulted in a diverse global customer base.
HP's broad product portfolio is aligned with growth areas of the market, so its sales efforts have proved highly effective. Presently, the company is targeting the tablet PC segment in a big way, where Apple has a strong foothold. We have seen this kind of strategic moves earlier as well, when HP had challenged other tech majors in their respective domains.
Despite the company's market position and compelling product line, we remain cautious about future growth, especially as competition from other big technology players, such as Apple, Acer, Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq: MSFT), and Dell Inc (Nasdaq: DELL) heats up. The increasing competition is expected to impact pricing in the market, thus moderating profitability to some extent.

Laplink[R] Wins Best Social Media Campaign Award of 2010.
Laplink Software, Inc. announced that it beat out some of the biggest names in the software industry and was awarded with the Best Computer: Software Social Media Campaign in the 2011 Internet Advertising Competition.
Laplink was awarded for its Laptop Giveaway Campaign, that ran in October and November of 2010, in which it partnered with Lenovo[R] to give away two of their new ThinkPad[R] Edge laptops. The contest was aimed at driving more Laplink brand awareness and opening up alternative lines of communication to the company through social media avenues. This strategy was extremely successful generating over 14 million impressions from the campaign.
"14 million impressions is a staggering number considering the bulk of them came from organic buzz," said Laplink Marketing Manager Neil Minetto. "Not only did we have a lot of people talking about us, but we were also able to turn them into customers and brand advocates."
The marketing team posted content to Facebook[R], Twitter[R] and the Laplink blog every day, Monday through Friday, which gave users an easy way to interact with the team and helped to establish a more open, communicative and personal side of Laplink. This strategy worked well as the team saw over eight million impressions through Twitter alone, which opened numerous lines of communication to consumers.
The contest was set up as a kind of raffle and the rules stipulated that entrants were eligible to receive unlimited entries, one for simply entering the contest and then one each time they mentioned Laplink or one of Laplink's products on the web. This ensured that posts relating to the contest were easily tracked and could always be linked back to Laplink.
"We wanted to show consumers that Laplink is made of people," continued Minetto. "I think marketing is often too formal; there is a time and place to kick your legs up and have an open discussion with your consumers and this campaign helped us do that through our social media channels. Our team did an incredible job putting this campaign together and it feels great to be recognized for our efforts."
Piggy-backing this campaign, Laplink is finalizing plans to launch a week-long spin off of the award-winning contest in which entrants will have the opportunity to win the "famous" laptop that was featured previously in daily posts. The Famous Laptop Contest will be structured similar to the previous campaign and will give contestants a platform to talk about their favorite parts about the contest, vote on favorite pictures and posts and re-engage with the Laplink team.
For more information about the award-winning contest and its results visit the Laplink blog here.

Bank of America Opens Hometown Hopefuls(R) Family Center in Beijing, China.
Former U.S. President George H. W. Bush Welcomes Team USA and Their Families
Family Center Serves as Home Away from Home for U.S. Olympians Competing in Beijing and Those Who Helped Them Get Here
BEIJING, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- George H. W. Bush, 41st President of the United States, Jim Scherr, Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee, and U.S. Olympians Steven Lopez, Mark Lopez, Diana Lopez (taekwondo) and Howard Bach (badminton) today officially opened the Bank of America Hometown Hopefuls(R) Family Center. Located in the heart of Beijing, the Family Center recognizes the important role that families and friends play in the life of an elite athlete, and provides them with a home away from home during the 2008 Olympic Games.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080809/CLSA001-a ) (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080809/CLSA001-b ) (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050720/CLW086LOGO-b )
In his remarks at the dedication ceremony of the Family Center, Mr. Bush said, "I would like to commend Bank of America for the tremendous support they are giving the U.S. Olympic Team through the Hometown Hopefuls Family Center. Bank of America's support creates opportunities for the United States to help train, outfit and send America's athletes to the Olympic Games and ensure that the loved ones who helped them get there can complete the journey as well."
Through the Bank of America Hometown Hopefuls Family Center, nearly 600 U.S. Olympians and their family members have access to free hospitality during the 17 days of competition, making their visit to Beijing more affordable and, in some cases, even possible. The Family Center offers many of the comforts of home including: complimentary lunch, dinner and other refreshments; wide-screen televisions with closed-circuit Olympic coverage; concierge services provided by The Hilton Family(R) of hotels; complimentary tickets to an Olympic event for up to four family members; and an Internet Cafe provided by Lenovo(R) for athletes and their families who are eager to stay connected with others back home in the United States.
"We are honored to support the athletes who are representing the U.S. in Olympic competition, and recognize the personal sacrifices their family and friends have made to support, encourage and foster each athlete's Olympic dream," said Kenneth D. Lewis, chairman and chief executive officer, Bank of America. "We hope that participation in the Hometown Hopefuls Family Center program adds to their experience here in Beijing, as all the members of Team USA compete on the world's greatest stage."
"Family support has always been vital to my athletic performance," said Steven Lopez. "Bank of America has been and continues to be a valuable and committed partner, providing my family with a home away from home during their time in Beijing, which is comforting to me as I prepare to represent America in Olympic competition."
Throughout the Olympic Games, Bank of America will operate the Family Center from 11:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m., providing the following refreshments and services:
-- 49,725 Bottles of spring water -- 38,675 Slices of pizza -- 33,150 Ounces of melon coconut soup -- 27,635 Bottles of Diet Coke -- 22,100 Pot stickers -- 16,575 Mu Shu wrappers -- 6,800 Glasses of white wine -- 2,900 Pounds of shrimp -- 1 Calling Card per family provided by AT&T -- 36 laptops provided by Lenovo(R)
The Family Center will also provide America's athletes with motivational support through a collection of more than 20,000 cheers from fans back home. The support is a result of America's Cheer(TM), a grassroots campaign launched by Bank of America in April that provided an opportunity for all Americans to cheer on the nation's finest athletes as they prepared to compete at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The cheers which will be on display in the Family Center come in all different forms -- energetic videos, audio recordings, heartfelt letters and inspiring photos. Fans can continue to show their support for Team USA during the Games by visiting http://www.americascheer.com/
"At an Olympic Games, athletes are focused on their performance. The Bank of America Hometown Hopefuls program allows them to have peace of mind with regard to their families' Olympic experience," said USOC chief executive officer Jim Scherr. "In addition to providing a centralized location for the families of U.S. Olympians, the program affords America's Olympic athletes a place to interact and celebrate their success at the Games."
Bank of America is widely recognized as a major corporate sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Team, making it possible for the nation's best athletes to represent the United States in world-class competition. Bank of America's involvement with the Olympic Movement dates back to 1992, when it first signed on as an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Team that competed in Barcelona, Spain. The company has supported every U.S. Olympic Team since, including the Americans who will compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Support of America's Athletes
Bank of America's commitment to U.S. Olympic athletes is realized through the Bank of America Hometown Hopefuls(R) program. Through this program, the bank provides financial support and marketing exposure to 12 U.S. Olympic athletes and hopefuls. They include: Tony Azevedo (waterpolo); Howard Bach (badminton); Shannon Boxx (soccer); Jennie Finch (softball); Brett Heyl (kayak); Sada Jacobson (fencing); swimmers Cullen Jones, Tara Kirk and Aaron Peirsol; Ogonna Nnamani (volleyball); Alicia Sacramone (gymnastics); and Lauryn Williams (track & field).

Mixed signals by tech elite on iPhone.
Byline: Troy Wolverton
Jun. 29--Even some of of the valley's wealthiest, most prominent players can get excited about a new tech product, it turns out.
With Apple's much-hyped new iPhone handset going on sale today, just about all of the technorati -- like a good chunk of consumer America -- seems to have been pondering whether to buy it or not. For the tech elite, price is generally not a concern, but usefulness is.
Some are more than ready to ditch their BlackBerrys, Treos and other gadgets for the iPhone -- or add it to their collection. But for now, many others have decided that the iPhone isn't good enough to replace what they're already using.
Count Sun Microsystems Chairman Scott McNealy among those who are saying "no" to the iPhone.
"I love my BlackBerry," he said, referring to the popular phone and e-mail device from Research In Motion.
Still, a sizable contingent of the tech elite plan to be waiting in line with the masses today -- or sending surrogates to do so for them.
Jim Breyer, managing partner of venture capital firm Accel Partners, said he's "excited" about getting one today. In fact, Breyer's already mulling what song he will play first on his new device, probably one from The White Stripes, a hard-rock band.
"I have seen the phone, and it's as compelling as the iPod was at introduction," Breyer said.
In case you've been living under a rock and haven't heard, the iPhone is Apple's first cell phone. Its signature feature is a large touch screen, which does away with a typical keypad and even the standard cell phone "call" and "hang up" buttons.
All the tricks
In addition to making voice calls, the iPhone can store and play digital music and videos, surf the Internet and check e-mail. The device, which will come in $499, 4-gigabyte and $599, 8-gigabyte versions, runs on a special version of Apple's lauded Mac operating system.
The buzz surrounding it is in spite of the fact that few among the elite, not to mention the hoi polloi, have even touched the device, much less played with one. Other than Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Google CEO Eric Schmidt -- an Apple director -- is the only tech titan known to have had an iPhone before its official launch.
"This is the privilege of being on the Apple board," Schmidt said, while showing off his iPhone at a Google event on the company's campus earlier this month. "I have to guard this with my life around here."
Not many among the Silicon Valley elite will admit plans to join the enthusiasts already in line. In fact, many of those who said they'd be buying the phone said they'd hold off until after the first days' rush.
Zach Lynch, executive director of the Neurotechnology Industry Organization in San Francisco, sees the iPhone as a "neural prosthetic" and looks forward to seeing how he'll use the device. But he plans to wait several weeks to buy one.
"It's a brand new product," Lynch said. "They say the battery lasts. But I want to see if it really does last."
But at least some will join the masses.
One of them could be Hank Barry, an attorney with Howard Rice and the former CEO of Napster. Barry's wife wants one to replace her aging Nokia phone. Barry's considering getting one as well after he tests hers out. Meanwhile, he and his wife are negotiating about who's going to have to stand in line to buy the phones.
"She'll be delighted to have it," Barry said. "She's a big fan of Apple products."
Indeed, the iPhone may find its biggest fans in the valley not among the tech elite themselves, but with their wives, sons and daughters. Mitchell Kertzman, a partner at venture capital firm Hummer Winblad, for instance, plans to get one iPhone for himself and one for his 15-year-old daughter, Abigail. But Kertzman expects that his daughter's will be the only one that really gets used.
"Abigail . . . is an iPod/iTunes fanatic and . . . has thought of little else since she first saw the announcement (except maybe the new Harry Potter book and movie)," Kertzman said.
The e-mail factor
While he will buy an iPhone because he loves gadgets, Kertzman is a big mobile e-mail user, which means he might not use his much.
"I don't think this release of the iPhone will be quite ready for prime time for business/e-mail users," he said.
Many of those who plan on holding off on an iPhone cite similar reasons for why Kertzman doesn't plan on using his.
That the phone won't support "push" e-mail from Microsoft exchange servers and runs on AT&T's relatively slow EDGE network are two deal killers for Bill Burnham, a former venture capitalist who now runs Inductive Capital, a small hedge fund.
"It looks like a great phone," said Burnham. "If Apple solved all these issues I'd take a serious look but until then, I will just admire from afar."

Intellon wins in Europe and Asia for it HomePlug ICs.(BROADBAND OVER POWERLINES)(integrated circuits)(Brief article)
Intellon Corporation, a provider of standards-based powerline communications (PLC) integrated circuits (ICs), announced that 12 service providers in Europe and Asia are now using Intellon's HomePlug ICs for in-home IPTV distribution. Operators now deploying Intellon's ICs for IPTV include 1 & 1, Chung Hwa Telecom, Club Internet, France Telecom, Free, Hanaro Telecom, neuf cegetel, PCCW, Simmin, Tele2, Telecom Italia France, and TPSA.
As with any pay television service, IPTV has to be carrier grade in terms of performance. Service providers in Europe and Asia typically began installing IPTV service by running new Ethernet cable to distribute the broadcast TV and video-on-demand content from the residential gateways to the IP set-top boxes near the customers' TVs. Before deploying Intellon's solution, operators were consistently reporting that 10 percent to 30 percent of their customers were canceling the newly ordered IPTV service when new Ethernet wiring was required for the installation.
