NSW: Whale keeps returning to favourite haunts
A pregnant southern right whale has become Sydney's favourite tourist spending after yet
another day lolling about in Middle Harbour in front of scores of onlookers.
The whale nicknamed ALEX today resurfaced near Reef Beach off Manly heads to spend its
sixth day frolicking off Sydney's shores.
A National Parks and Wildlife Service spokeswoman says its behaviour was consistent with a
female getting ready to calve, although officers were not certain if it is male or female.
She says the whale would likely give birth in the harbour area in the next few days and
could spend up to another week there if it was pregnant.
The spokeswoman doubts pleasure boats watching the whale are preventing it moving out to
sea because this activity slows at night and during weekdays.
A whale last calved off Sydney's coastline in 1993, near the northern beaches.
